My little corner of the internet has been going for five months now and I’m very excited to say that I’ve been nominated for a Liebster Award! This is an award that is given to bloggers by other bloggers so it’s a great way to spread the love and appreciation among bloggers. What a lovely idea! To find out more about the award read The Global Aussies blog post which has everything you need to know.
I was nominated for the Liebster Award by the awesome Rebecca who you can find over at Rayner En Route. Rebecca is a travel blogger and journalist on the hunt for adventure. Her blog features great writing and informative posts including some from recent volunteering in Kenya and a blog post about hiking a giant crater (the name of which, when translated means ‘a place for dead bodies’! Eek). There is also a post on Stockholm in snow! It looks so beautiful covered in a blanket of white.
My Favourite Blog
I have a few but I think I have to say The Everywhereist. I love the fact that her blog exists to document her travels with her husband (who has the most amazing moustache in the world!) whilst he is super busy working in the places they visit. Her writing is absolutely incredible and really has you visualising her experiences. She can have me tearing up one minute and laughing out loud the next. She writes from the heart about real issues affecting our world today with a personal, passionate spin. Some of my favourite posts are humour filled – the best one may just be the one about the pink milk! Lesson – always put milk away after a trip back from the supermarket! I have just finished reading her book ‘All Over The Place: Adventures in Travel, True Love, and Petty Theft’ and I loved it.
10 Random Facts About Yourself
1. I am a super fast reader. It means I read the Harry Potter books so fast that by the time the movies came out, I’d forgotten the plot lines.
2. When we watched the sunset in Santa Monica, I put my hoodie on the beach to sit on. In doing so, a lot of Californian sand made it into my pocket. I’ve since washed the hoodie but some sand still remains and every time I put my hand in my pocket it reminds me of gorgeous Santa Monica.
3. If it was possible to live in a Disney park, I would.
4. I love reading but get motion sickness so can’t read books on planes or cars and coaches. It’s annoying.
5. When I was little I wanted to be an astronaut or an air stewardess. I had to dismiss it because of aforementioned travel sickness.
6. I love everything Peter Pan, books, movies, all of it. Except the 2003 movie.
7. I love everything space and got to visit the Kennedy Space Center in Florida when I was little. A couple of years ago I finally got to visit the Johnson Space Center in Houston and I was like a kid at Christmas. I was so excited to see the actual Mission Control where the Apollo missions were launched, a floor below the current Mission Control Room!
8. My drink of choice is Jack Daniels & coke.
9. They serve JD & Coke in the cafe at the Country Music Hall of Fame. This is also where the Studio B tours leave from so when we were in Nashville and had time to kill before our tour, we had a couple of JD & Cokes. It meant we did the Studio B tour tipsy and the tour guide loved our enthusiasm.
10. When I was younger my parents took me and my brother to S. Africa. My mum got confused with navigating using a map so my brother and I had to navigate my dad from Cape Town to the Cape of Good Hope and back. We managed it but we nearly got locked in the park as they were starting to close as we were driving back to the entrance – my dad’s fault not ours!
On accepting my nomination for the award comes a promise to pay it forward to other bloggers and also a few questions that I will answer below:
Questions from Rebecca
Do you prefer budget or luxury travel?
A bit of both? I like to stay in nice hotels that don’t break the bank but will happily stay in hostels if they are in a perfect location (though I have grown out of sharing dorm rooms so will get a private room instead).
How has travelling changed your life?
I am extremely lucky and privileged that I inherited my love of travelling from my parents. It means I constantly spent summers during school break abroad on long month long holidays, which I think has made me a much more rounded individual. It’s given me a love of exploring new cities and experiencing new sights and sounds.
If you could learn any language, what would it be and why?
When I was in school, I studied Spanish and even had a tutor but now, I’ve forgotten most of it so I’d love to learn it again properly so I could use it if I’m abroad in a Spanish speaking country. I am currently trying to learn some French on Duolingo though as I treated myself to an annual pass for Disneyland Paris and am slightly worried about getting lost in Lille during Eurostar connections!
If you could only stay in one place forever, where would you choose and why?
Sydney, Nashville or Santa Monica!
I absolutely love country music and Nashville is the home of country music! I fell in love when I visited a few years ago, so much musical history and Broadway has live music in all the bars all the time.
Santa Monica stole my heart last year. We ended up in Santa Monica after a country music festival in Vegas and three mega packed days at Disneyland so Santa Monica was the relaxed atmosphere I craved after a busy week or so. I loved the laid back attitude of the locals, the gorgeous fresh vegan food, the endless Californian sunshine and the wonderful sandy beach.
I have always had a soft spot for Australia and I remember I was so excited when my dad announced that we were spending 5 weeks in Australia during the school holidays. That was one of my favourite holidays and I really want to make it back there someday. I loved Sydney – the harbour, the food and conquering fears climbing the Bridge.
Where was the best food you’ve eaten? What was it?
Argh, that might be the hardest question ever. I love food! The vegan fried chicken place that opened in Hackney, London this year has fried ‘chicken’ and mac & ‘cheese’ that makes you think you are living in a dream world. Also the vegan stuffed crust pizza I had in Brighton a few years ago. The food in Prague was mouthwatering too. Too many options to chose just one thing!
Where is your dream destination?
So many! Somewhere in the Caribbean but I am worried that some of the islands might not be LGBT friendly. I would also love to do a trip to Antarctica to see PENGUINS!! Since I turned vegan, I have no desire to go to zoos or aquariums and I would love to see penguins in their natural habitat.
Where are you travelling next?
I have a weekend in Disneyland Paris booked for this month and I am honestly so excited! I can’t wait to experience the 25th anniversary magic and the new parade.
What has been the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you whilst travelling?
Oh wow. I wìsh I had a good story. Let me tell you a couple and you can decide if they are embarrassing… I can’t think of any that are truly cringe-worthy though. When I was younger, on our Australia holiday, my brother and I did some snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef but I was freaking out about being so close to fish and trying to get my breathing right as it was my first time snorkeling so I was panicking. When we got back to the platform by the boat, my brother pointed out that there was a massive fish below us, I looked down and it touched my leg so I screamed through my snorkel. I got out of the sea pretty fast after that!
Last year, at Disneyland, Anaheim, we ended up at the back of the boat on Pirates of the Caribbean because there was only two of us. Unfortunately there was a massive puddle of water on the seat, even before the drop that occurs during the ride, so I left the ride with a wet butt and had to walk around with wet shorts for the rest of the evening. They were beige so it was pretty obvious!
If you could only see one set of wonders (ancient, Modern and Natural), which would you choose and why?
The geysers at Yellowstone National Park. Also Cinque Terre in Itay.
Beach holiday or city break?
Both. Can I say that? I would get bored lying on the beach for a week but I love being there, being by the sea always makes me happy and has a calming effect. I love city breaks because there is always so much to explore and learn about and it’s never boring!
What was the first overseas destination you travelled to?
Canada when I was 5. I think it was Toronto. It was for a family wedding. I remember getting a little Canada flag pin on the plane and getting to see the cockpit with my younger brother. Then I remember playing in the sand at the golf course where the wedding was held, staying at someone’s house and drinking juice from a teddy bear bottle at the supermarket. That’s it. I haven’t been to Canada since but I do have a Trek America trip booked for next year to Vancouver and the surrounding National Parks so I can’t wait!
This was really hard as a lot of the blogs I read don’t fit the criteria for this award. So I only have one for now but will come back and add to this post in the future, if I can.
Lara from Lost Lara. Check Lara’s blog out for the macabre, weird and strange experiences you never knew you wanted to have.
